The US president is coming here on Friday 13 July, 20 days after the big march for a People’s Vote. Let’s have a summer of giant demos.
Saturday June 23 marks the two-year anniversary of the EU referendum result. The People’s Vote campaign will be holding what promises to be the UK’s biggest ever pro-European march to demand that the public get a vote on the Brexit deal.

Hot on the heels of that march will be Donald Trump’s “working visit” to the UK. Even if he steers clear of the capital, as suggested in the press, big crowds will protest against the policies of this sexist, bigoted leader.
Brexit won’t be the central issue in the Trump demos. But this will still be a great opportunity to build on the People’s Vote march because Trump’s visit will bring home the folly of Brexiters’ geopolitical fantasy that we should cut ties with Europe to stride across the world hand-in-hand with America.
Demand a vote on the final Brexit deal
Click here to find out moreTrump wasn’t president two years ago. His election is a new fact – and one that shows the geopolitical bankruptcy of Brexit. He is threatening trade wars, wants to tear up the climate change pact and is hoping to do the same to the Iran nuclear deal. Barack Obama didn’t want any of those things.
Another new fact is that Vladimir Putin is threatening us. A former Russian agent and his daughter were poisoned with a chemical weapon in Salisbury. Meanwhile, the former head of the FBI says Trump, who used to say Nato is obsolete, may have been compromised by the Kremlin. This too is a new fact.
Getting the voters to focus on geopolitics isn’t easy. But Trump’s visit offers a chance to do so – and to ask whether it really makes sense to part ways with our European allies, with whom we share many values, to buddy up with such a bully.
Pro-Europeans should put a date in their diary for June 23. To keep up the momentum, they should put July 13 in their diary too. If they do, Friday 13 could be unlucky for Trump – but a big step towards a people’s vote on the final Brexit deal.
