New referendum came top. But soft Brexit ideas also did well. We now need extra time to explore these properly.

While cancelling Brexit is in the national interest, we need to hold a People’s Vote before doing so - not afterwards.

Motion for confirmatory referendum got more votes than any other option - and more than PM’s deal - but still short of a majority.

These “soft” options have a lot in common but also important differences. Neither is deliverable and both are worse than staying in EU.

It’s great MPs have taken control of the Brexit process from a stubborn PM who has run out of ideas. Now they must use it wisely.

Priority in Parliament this week must be to get extra time to flesh out robust Brexit Plan B. Rush to vote on unclear options is dangerous.
