Anne Applebaum is a journalist, a historian and the director of the Transitions Forum at the Legatum Institute. She writes a column for the Washington Post and Slate on European and American politics, and contributes to the Spectator, the New York Review of Books and other publications in the US and the UK. Her books include Gulag: A History, which won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize, and Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe 1944-1956.
