Dear Jeremy Corbyn,
We, the undersigned, are pro-Europeans who would strongly consider voting for Labour in the upcoming European elections if your party were to take a clear stance in favour of a confirmatory public vote on any Brexit outcome.
A decisive stand on a confirmatory public vote in your European election manifesto is what Labour supporters want.
The biggest poll yet on this issue showed that three quarters of potential Labour voters want the people – not MPs – to have the final say on Brexit and to stay in the EU. It has also been shown that in every seat in the country the majority of Labour supporters now want to stay in the EU.
Why do so many want a public vote? For a start, it is now clear that the promises of the 2016 referendum cannot be kept. Any form of Brexit will mean costs to our economy and/or our sovereignty. Second, we are worried about a blindfold Brexit which leaves us no clearer about our future relationship with the EU even as we leave. That risks putting us at the mercy of a hard-Brexit Tory government in the near future. The people need a say now.
If Labour commits to a confirmatory public vote, it will not just be rewarded by its existing supporters. Pro-Europeans like us from across the country would strongly consider backing the party on May 23.
It’s in all our interests, for all our futures.
Sincerely,
